I appreciate all the insight you can provide on this.  My previous comment
about Java was based on this situation:

When I use the 64-bit Octave I get the following error (which I do not get
with the 32-bit Octave).  I specifically set the 'COM' interface. Here is the
offending line:

pauseflag = xlsread(intfname,'MAIN','pauseflag','COM');  

Output:
