Follow-up Comment #12, bug #53510 (project octave): I don't think you need Java 9 to test this bug, if the solution is to remove the version check entirely. You can test it with whatever Java you have access to that work with Octave on Windows. The only thing that needs testing is if you want to try installing a Java 1.4 to see whether this check provides any value, by preventing something from breaking later.
