Follow-up Comment #14, bug #55908 (project octave):

Rik:  Thanks, having the simpler test made debugging less painful.

I pushed the following changeset:

It seems to fix the problem for me.  I think it's OK to manage the stack of
callback objects in the gh_manager class since it is used there and the
callbackobject property is read-only so it should not be possible for a user
to interfere with the internal management of the current callback object.
