Follow-up Comment #20, bug #55908 (project octave):

There is a project somewhere about trying to tighten the list of exported
symbols.  I started on it a long time ago and then gave it up.  Not for any
particular reason, but it was a lot of work and there were more interesting
things to work on.

So how frequent are large, complicated graphics plots like the one from the
original poster?  If they are relatively uncommon we could wait until next
year and 6.1 release.

Otherwise, this is clearly a regression that should be fixed and we should
determine the least impactful way to do it.  If it is only incrementing a
variable in configure.ac that doesn't sound too onerous.  Is it just the
definition of OCTAVE_API_VERSION?
