@jwe: Thanks, everything seems to work now.

Final note, this bug was reported as a regression in performance for version
5.1.0.  However, both Markus's and jwe's patches were made to the development
branch.  Should they be hg graft'ed back to stable?

I just tried the original code on the stable branch and it took 6.5 seconds on
my machine to close the figure.
