I've deleted the tidyxml.m removal part from your patch, applied it, pushed
some more fixes, made an io-2.6.2 release, tested it in Linux and Windows 10
(OK, with dev Octave only) and uploaded the tarballs to the release tracker.

@OP (David):
You are right that info on how spreadsheet I/O interfaces work is obscure.
I've put some more info about it in the xlsread/xlswrite Texinfo help headers.
Hopefully it is a bit more clear now.
