Follow-up Comment #3:

OK. Re-titling accordingly.
This might be related to (or be a duplicate of) the goal of patch #8919.

I'm not sure if gnulib can (or should) be compiled as a shared library.
But hiding the (variable set of) gnulib functions in liboctave might be
useful.
