Follow-up Comment #12, bug #59719 (project octave):

The problem is that dec2bin does not accept complex integers such as "5i". 
The adjective "real" was an attempt to document that.  The input validation in
dec2base calls iscomplex() and issues an error when true.  Checking with
Matlab,


dec2bin (5i)
error: D must be real


so they prefer "real" versus the synonym "non-complex".
