Follow-up Comment #24, bug #59706 (project octave):
OoOH. I got Rik's comment #19 the wrong way round. gnulib's
`canonicalize_file_name` replacement is definitely calling their `stat`
replacement on Windows. So some kind of of `stat` was indeed called at least
twice.
