Follow-up Comment #69, bug #59546 (project octave):

I *do* have one monitor with DPI scaling (or Hi-DPI or whatever it is called)
set to 125%. That is the monitor I usually have the Octave GUI running (and I
used for the tests here). The second monitor is set to 100% scaling.

Running the example from comment #68 with my original settings (folder `125`
in the .zip file) or 100% DPI scaling on both monitors (folder `100` in the
.zip file) leads to similar results afaict.
The cropping of the .pdf file is off in both cases. If anything, the cropping
seems to be worse if both monitors are set to 100% scaling.

By "default graphics settings", do you mean if I set any default values for
graphics properties (e.g. in one of Octave's startup files)? Afaict, I don't
set any of those. The startup files are empty atm (apart from some comments).
