Yes, the octave-gui process stays in background (I can see octave-gui.exe in
the task manager), but there's no icon on the task bar except that of the
command prompt (if using alt-tab, also there's no gui anywhere). 

If I run octave-gui several times, the task manager shows the exact same
number of octave-gui processes. So, there can be lot of them (see attachment).
They just keep "idle", with no CPU consumption and about 7~8 Mbytes of memory
usage each.
