Follow-up Comment #49:
I pushed a change to the stable branch that should allow getting the correct
canonicalized path for files on the mapped network drives that point to a
directory on a UNC network share:

That actually allowed to simplify the function a bit.
It should be part of the next nightly build for Windows.
Marking as ready for test again.
