Follow-up Comment #2, patch #4036 (project wesnoth):

I have a new version (new-game.cpp.diff) that should work better with the
newer version of Wesnoth and fixes the problems mentioned. By default it does
nothing to '\376'. Besides being valid for the parser, the file/line and/or
textdomain information can be useful information sometimes. It can be
excessively cluttering though... A command-line option is present to remove
the "\376.*\n" lines before output.

According to gcc documentation, IIRC, it uses -Dname (not to be confused with
-Dname=value, which my patch does not support).
