How about changing everything to "chess engines".
The strings would then be:
Chess engine white/ Chess engine black, Two chess engines
Illegal move "%s" from chess engine %s
The chess engine accepts your draw offer
The chess engine offers a draw
Chess engine match
+ changes in the documentation.
We could add a --firstChessEngine option, but keep --firstChessProgram
around for a few versions and print out a warning that the new option
should be used. The moment a user would save a new setting file, it
would be automatically updated anyway.
