Yeah, this is a known problem.
DDD requires gnuplot-3.x. Try with the last of the 3-series.
I've spent a bit of time poking at this bug, and it doesn't look trivial.
It may be that gnuplot-4.x simply doesn't offer the feature that DDD
needs (plotting directly to a given X-window).
Patches are welcome!
