There are a number of things that could be going wrong with the
process from configurations to building and installation.
First: Have you re-run the "bootstrap" script? This reads the
Makefile.am files to create the Makefile.in files. Then the
"configure" script takes the Makefile.in files and creates the
Makefiles for building.
So try running through the whole process again:
./bootstrap
./configure
make
sudo make install
