Yes, the work around is already in the cvs version.

After upgrading to the latest cvs version and applying your version 2 patch
(the GNUstep that I tested with before was a few days old) everything is
fine and the the speed is good now. The work around in the cvs version
really speed things up.

I see. Then maybe there should be some code in Gworkspace.app to check the
size of the image and use a different method if it is smaller than the
Content Panel. It is not pretty to see a 48x48 icon scaled up to the size
of the Inspector.

I don't know, I am not a developer. I am just a user who sees a bright
future for GNustep and a love for the NeXTstep interface- that is why I am
beta testing and giving feed back. So far in the Content Inspector of
Gworkspace.app 2.7, I am able to load tiff's, jpeg's, xpm's. gif's. but not
png's.

Yes, it uses extensions to determine file types.
