OTOH, on 21.3.50 it is already easy to keep track of it:

  (when (facep 'trailing-whitespace)
    (setq-default show-trailing-whitespace t)
    (set-face-attribute 'trailing-whitespace nil
                        :foreground "red"
                        :background "black"
                        :underline t))

or whatever other face setting that makes it stand out clearly.
