Cut&paste stuff from a TeX buffer with one encoding into one with a different encoding or into an HTML buffer, and the display will no longer correspond to the content in any meaningful way. I don't see the point in making the efficiency (or its lack of) a governing parameter in choosing between text properties and overlays. -- David Kastrup
