font-lock is the perfect way to implement this, and it should be easy to tweak 
it to reveal passwords at point.  Look at how prettify-symbols-mode works for 
inspiration (it uses fontlock and it removes the font-locking when 
prettify-symbols-unprettify-at-point is set)
