All of those options... aren't actually part of X. Including Xft.dpi
and such. There could easily also be a mapping between CRTC identifiers
and scale factors in xsettings.

External monitors aside, HiDPI works fine on most X desktop environments
(I don't know about Plasma) out of the box.

When will that future be, if under Wayland the protocols for input
methods, server-side decorations and output management (for which there
are actually multiple protocols) are still unstable?
