Let's assume that we had a newsgroup rather than a mailing list.  You'll
note that any news reader worth a crap has a "f"ollowup function (aka reply
to the list) and a "r"eply function (aka reply to the person who made the
posting). 

Do you get all confused with newsgroups?  Why do you think that a mailing
list should be treated any differently?

When *I* reply, I reply to the person who posted the message.  When I
followup, I reply to the list.

The "poster" <> "the list".
