No doubt both of these are reasons he selected ':'. Its a character that
nobody would reasonably use for a branch name anyways. 

On the filesystem, I've got no doubts that it'll be encoded differently,

Though there is probabably a better way of doing it, two ways (both with
negative consequences) quickly come to mind:

  1. Add another level to the name on the filesystem:
     cat--branch--subbranch--version

  2. Use another character on the filesystem:
     cat--branch~subbranch--version

Like I said, there's probably a better way of doing this.
