You really ought to try gmane -- it has lots of lists, is well maintained and
featureful (e.g., good spam prevention), has a nice web interface for those
times when you want to check a group on the road, and best of all, somebody
else maintains it... :-)

Just point your news program at the nntp port on news.gmane.org (or check
http://gmane.org for more, docs etc).
