Thank you for getting back to me.

I haven't thought of licensing very much, since my codes aren't nearly good enough to be licensed. Also, I know that there are a lot of different licenses out there (e.g. MIT, Creative Commons, BSD licenses, various GPL versions, and LGPL). When I encounter them, I know I can generally use/study the code. If I'm unsure, I can always ask. But, I feel I don't know enough about the issue to make an intelligent decision when I'm on the other side.

Based on FSF track record, and reputation, if you require me to use GPL to use the images, I will.

But, what do you think is the best way to approach the licensing issue? Or, learn about this issue?

Best Regards,

Yuan Cao

If you distribute your program under the GPL there is no problem.
If you post your code on github, you should probably decide on a
license before posting it.

Are you willing to use GPL?

According to this message:

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/gnugo-devel/2003-01/msg00066.html

I made them with xpaint. (I'd forgotten.)

I think we used xpm because the format is simple, human readable and
files can be loaded into emacs. They can probably be converted into
jpg's using either Imagemagick or gimp (which might give better
results).
