The "u+x" mode is a bit strange -- and the file lists as an executable
on Linux if coloration or -F is enabled.  This mode is often set when
moving files from Window to Unix (let me know if you want to know more,
it is written up in one of my Linux books -- something to do with the
Windows archive flag being preserved).

Regarding "g+r", this has merit, but was not the point of my comment.
