Thanks everybody for your help!

I asked the question because MusicXML describes an element of the figured bass 
this way:

      <figured-bass>
        <figure><figure-number>3</figure-number></figure>
        <duration>8</duration>
      </figured-bass>

I’ll use ‘figured bass element’ and 'figured bass elements’, they suit my 
purpose nicely.
