Umm... can anyone give an example, in any system, of what a revision
identifier that you _didn't_ end up doing cut and paste to use would
be?

For these purposes, assume that there's some mechanism so that you
don't need to do additional cut-and-pasting to refer to "parent of x"
or "child of x", etc., where x is a previously cut-and-pasted
identifier or the working directory.  (Basically, I just say this to
eliminate the case "I don't want to cut and paste to do a diff
against a parent revision", because we can make that part work without
any fancy non-SHA1 identifiers.)
