This could be actually done in mainline. AFAIR I moved some code from
automate.cc to database.cc to make it available for both, mtn branch
(where it is used to spit out a big fat warning if the target branch has
no common ancestors with the current one) and the original mtn automate
common_ancestors. I'll have another look at this tonight.
