Follow-up Comment #14, bug #45488 (project octave):

I see some odd behavior from this change as well, the extended.pdf file keeps
getting rebuilt every successive make even though it is already there, the X
display flashes (I assume this is due to invisible figures mapping and
unmapping very quickly), and the pdflatex command is much too verbose. But I
don't have the error Michael is seeing. This is with the version committed to
the default branch.

Can we also change the example to use a better (free software) PDF viewer
instead of acroread? Or use "xdg-open" as the command to open the file?
