Follow-up Comment #132, bug #54235 (project octave): It is also not that difficult to build gcc from source. One problem is that one usually cannot jump too far from your existing gcc. So I would guess with 4.x.x. you should be able to build 5.5.x, but most likely not 7.x.x.
