Follow-up Comment #30, bug #55347 (project octave):

@Rik: The creation of the single settings objects is tested for success. Thus,
AFAIK, the pointer returned by get_settings always points to an existing and
valid object. This settings object is not destroyed except for the gui's
shutdown.

However, the settings file might become inaccessible. I am currently looking
for a solution for this problem but since that will likely be a quite large
changeset, it will not go into the stable branch.

To conclude, I suggest to ignore the warnings related to accessing the
settings pointer without further testing against nullptr for now.
