Follow-up Comment #12, bug #57867 (project octave):

I'm personally not set up to work with compiled code (i stick to m-file
editing). so someone else will have to try this out and see if it fixes the
bug satisfactorily. Maybe @mtmiller can make a more useful comment.

I would suggest making and posting a patch with the proposed changes that
maintain matlab compatibility while fixing the bug as described in the first
few comments and the linked mailing list discussion.  that patch is more
likely to be evaluated by other developers who can quickly look at it, push it
on their system and test it out.
