Follow-up Comment #3, bug #58004 (project octave):

Thanks for your explanation. I indeed need xmlread, as it is part of multiple
Matlab/Octave scripts. The workaround of copying it from a previous release
worked fine, but is cumbersome and may prevent users from updating the io
package.

I have installed Octave 5.2.0 with io package version 2.6.1 and copied the
xmlread.m from io version 2.4.13. I have java xerces v2_12_1 installed. 

I have tested the demo discussed in the cited thread. That is:

while 1
demo xmlread
endwhile

I do not get any error, let alone the segfault. I hope that others can repeat
this test and confirm absence of errors on other platforms, as this may
demonstrate that the previously reported segfault does not occur. It may have
been due to other elements on the reporter's machine. Would this suffice to
start re-including xmlread in future releases of the io package?
