Follow-up Comment #15, bug #58004 (project octave):

If I'm not mistaken there's a current GSOC project for bringing jsonlab to
Octave, so your wish seems taken care of :-)

Java itself isn't so bad, it's more the way it has been used that can be
troublesome.
FYI, most spreadsheet I/O interfaces in the io package are Java based, all of
them have been working reliably for about 9-10 years now.
