After enjoying several hours of no surious newlines the problem returned. I
disconnected from internet and restarted Octave. Unlike last time I continued
to get spurious newlines while disconnected.

I then reconnected to internet. Restarted Octave, and now while connected the
newlines every 30seconds has gone away again (for now). 

Strange behaviour, but felt I best update lest one thinks disconnecting from
internet alone solves problem.
