Reading that article what I conclude is that RMS does not support
Ximian
(Ximian has "parted ways" with the Free software movement).
The other part about the convenience of using LGPL rather than the GPL
in some
cases is not new and I don't think it has been said by RMS as a way of
supporting Ximian.

In fact, I must admit that you're right.

But according to what I frequently read on forums, many people thinks that RMS and the FSF support Ximian.

It seems to me that you have the option of either using Red Carpet or
downloading via ftp some packages that you can then install with your
favorite
installing tool (if you succeed in loging into the FTP server which I
could
not do today). But I agree that it is pitiful that one has to go to
XIMIAN to
get binary packages for GNOME.

It is possible to get GNOME without using Ximian services.

- This is not a problem that Ximian provide GNOME.
- This is not a problem that Ximian provide only Ximian GNOME (ie : not GNOME + gnome office + balsa, the first mailer, but Ximian GNOME with Ximian logo everywhere and with Evolution) - This is not a problem that a link to Ximian exists on the page "get gnome" at gnome.org

The problem is that the only way to get recent GNOME binaries (differents dans distros ones) is to use Ximian service that only provide an half of GNOME, using RedCarpet that is not a collaborative work software but a company self promotion software (but is a free software, right), since no one can create a channel for this software.

This problem exist for historical reason : the main reason evoked of the creation of Ximian, called Helixcode, was enhancing the distribution of GNOME.

But address@hidden is probably not the best place to discuss this :)

cheers
