[avr-chat] how to program surface-mount micros?

I'm considering using a surface mount tiny28 in my next project to keep
overalls size down, but I've only worked with the DIP packages and am at a
loss in how to program the surface mount ones.
I don't see any place to plug them in on the STK500, is there some kind of
adapter? or is there a socket to adapt the suface mount chip to a DIP?

I'm pretty new to all this so please forgive what are probably obvious
questions to some.
