Not sure how Brian applied Joerg's patches but one can "make patch" which downloads the source files (if not already in /usr/ports/ distfiles) and does everything the ports system does prior to start of compilation. Then one can make any desired mods, and "make" or "make install" picks up where "make patch" left off and one's custom version is installed and registered.

Its pretty cool, especially if one wishes to modify something like apache beyond what has been predefined in "make config".
