BSD sites make no secret of that observation, its claimed as a feature  
of the license.

A corollary is that once your changes make it into the public code  
base then someone else is less likely to come along and make arbitrary  
changes which break your changes. When they make changes they usually  
make them in such a way as to retain yours.
