Though it may be true that the site needs to be refurbished,
I think your proposal is everything  but the right way to do
it.

I'm sorry,  if I sound  rude, but that  "overengineered" box
style looks  far less professional than  the old website. In
my eyes  you have to  lighten it up  very much. Recategorize
everything into at most 3-4 of those boxes. Take that border
away  and make  the  background lighter  (maybe even  pastel
colors).

Don't  forget,   that  those   steps/boxes  belong   to  the
background and  should not  stop people  from being  able to
fluently get information.

Again,  I  don't  want  you   to  take  offense  at  what  I
write---IMHO  the   old  style  is  far   more  professional
looking. And this is *my personal opinion.
