I find the first version (1997)  quite nice, with appeal both to those
who  like  pictures (nice  OPENSTEP  4.2  objects  with 'post-it'  and
labels),  and to those  who prefer  text, in  addition to  the lighter
look.


Yes, I also like that design nicest of all other used. Here are two others:

Nevertheless, I think that the first page does not have to contain too much 
text/information. Just few links like that gnustep.org design from 1997. And I 
agree with what was mentioned here before, that the contents is most important 
and simple is beutiful.
