I've always found the effect of show-paren-mode pointless (and rather
annoying) when writing prose, e.g. in org-mode. I therefore think it
should be enabled by default only in prog-mode.

It's an option, but if you are in the minority, maybe we'll just suggest you turn it off locally.

I've never had problems with having it enabled with prose, but then again I don't use Org.

By the way, VSCode seems to have a feature to enable highlighting the
enclosing brackets when inside expressions. Perhaps we should add
that feature as well (unless we already have it)?

We don't, but it seems like a minor variation in show-paren-mode's behavior. Might be easy enough to find a place to plug it in, for someone interested in the feature.
