I moved this experiment from my laptop which accesses the net via a squid
proxy to my desktop which is direct connect to the net (and has http_proxy
unset).

On my desktop this process now seems to work. Going back to my laptop
I find I was getting errors like this which I hadn't noticed earlier:

Does this not work behind a http_proxy?
