It's much more flexible than scp. SFTP essentially provides a full
network filesystem protocol, so you can hook any sort of client onto
it you want; besides the command-line "sftp" client which behaves much
like an FTP client, there's also at least one Linux filesystem that
lets you mount a remote machine using SFTP. scp only provides
equivalent functionality to rcp (so, for instance, it can't list a
directory, or change the permissions on an existing file).
