Easily done but it means you can't have more than one installation per
machine. A better idea would be to get the path of the program .exe, and
then tag data on to the end of that. I can supply code to do that, but can't
compile a binary so can't test it.

I don't think he's talking about the GPL and source code rights, that bit of
the GPL is irrelevant in this context. Its more the bit of the GPL
dislaiming a warranty - if they don't see that do they have some sort of
warranty? My understanding is "probably not", but INAL and I'm not sure.
