speech dispatcher not connecting to alsa

Hello Jan and list,

As you suggested, I installed speechd-el and started emacs with the
command

emacs -q

to avoid starting emacspeak. I'd first started speech dispatcher with
the command

sudo /etc/init.d/speech-dispatcher start

and once emacs started, started speechd-el with the command

m-x speechd-speak

There was no speech, and I've copied the output of
/var/log/speech-dispatcher/espeak.log below. Basically, the result is
the same as when I start orca with speech-dispatcher.

Tue Jan 13 20:59:04 2009 [81205] ALSA: Opening ALSA sound output
Tue Jan 13 20:59:04 2009 [81265] ALSA: Opening ALSA device
ALSA lib pcm.c:2196:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM pcm.dmixer
Tue Jan 13 20:59:04 2009 [84739] ALSA ERROR: Cannot open audio device
pcm.dmixer (No such file or directory)
Tue Jan 13 20:59:04 2009 [84768] ALSA ERROR: Cannot initialize Alsa device
'pcm.dmixer': Can't open.

Regards,

Rob
