The antialiasing is still another problem. In order to get it right,
one either has to blur the extension characters so that their width
becomes an entire multiple of the shrinking factor, or to glue
the characters together as bitmaps themselves. Metafont does provide
no solution for this problem, because it was designed for block-on-white
rendering, not anti-aliasing.
