After rethinking, I now believe that I might extend the virtual fonts
with a mechanism to produce extendable characters. The only drawback
I see is that the implementation will produce huge pixmaps for each
character, but since I do not foresee extensive use of the mechanism
in actual papers, this might be acceptable for the moment.

I'll try to implement something for the next release and
keep you informed.
