in syslog.conf 
local0.*           /var/log/tpop3d

I had it using "log-facility: mail" but changed it yesterday to separate it
from postfix.

Hmm. I'm struck that each time it gets stopped in
syslog(3). That doesn't happen when I try the same test
here.

I'm not certain it tells us anything, but is there
anything odd about how system logging is configured on
your machine?
